The Northern Branch of the Tasmanian Beekeeping Association is an independent organisation but affiliated with the Tasmanian Beekeeping Association.  It began in July 1970

Some notes of interest taken from archived minutes of the NBTBA. Some of the matters raised then are just as relevant today particularly the challenge of member participation.
FROM 23RD JULY 1970 – 22ND FEBRUARY 1979. During this time, meetings of the Northern Branch of the TBA Inc. were held at 233A Charles Street [on the corner of Charles and Canning streets; referred to as the ‘Hall Building’ adjacent to the former primary school on Charles Street]
MINUTES FROM 26TH JUNE 1985. Benzaldehyde – 12 5kg bottles.
MINUTES FROM 25TH JULY 1985. Meeting start 8:00pm and closed at 10:10pm. [Most meetings started at 8:00pm during the 1970s and 1980s]
MINUTES FROM 20TH MARCH 1986. Discussion turned to members not participating in the Club. In effect, not attending meetings or doing anything, but using the benefits of the Club. It was felt that the meetings should be more oriented towards teaching new beekeepers how to bee keep; to have more films; to try and get more participation.
MINUTES FROM 24TH APRIL 1986.

Club attendance – penalise or encourage? Andrew [Francombe]: Some come and don’t do anything – some never come.

Moved by Fred [unknown] and seconded by Barry [Murray] “That each month we have a theme of one aspect of beekeeping appropriate to the time of the year”. Carried
MINUTES FROM 26TH JUNE 1986. Extractor hire – risk of transfer of disease – should go through TBA or Government. Moved by Barry [Murray] and seconded by Herb [Bullock] “That we write to the TBA and get the practice of hire of extractors stopped on the grounds that it could spread disease from apiary to apiary”. Carried.
MINUTES FROM 31ST JULY 1986. Discussion on details of the mid-year dinner [This appears to be a regular event that took place over several years].
MINUTES FROM [DAY NOT GIVEN] NOVEMBER 1986. Greg Rainbird attends his first meeting of the Northern Branch of the TBA Inc. [No mention of Greg’s name in minutes prior to this date].
MINUTES FROM 29TH JUNE 1987. General Business – a note in the mail to those members who haven’t been to meetings lately.
MINUTES FROM 31ST OCTOBER 1989. Pollination – early December. Vast difference between pollination hives and honey hives. Two forms (1) cross-pollination of non-honey producers, pollen collectors only; (2) honey gathering, incidentally pollinating in the process, needing lots of sugar feeding
MINUTES FROM 25TH JUNE 1990. “That Ted Wakefield be made a life member”, moved Nolene [Donald], seconded Barry [Murray]; carried. Norm Hoyle was called to present Ted with a plaque or framed certificate of life membership. He reviewed Ted’s Bee Interest over [a] long

time; 22 years this organization. He presented Mrs Wakefield with a box of camellias. Ted gave a short word of thanks.
MINUTES FROM 26TH OCTOBER 1998. E. Wakefield also reminded that on the 29th of June 1999 the Northern Branch will be 30 years old.
MINUTES FROM 28TH JUNE 1999.

• Delegates report [TBA conference]. Saturday night a most enjoyable dinner but members expressed concern that the auction got out of control and took too much time away from the honey competition. The belly dancers and the St Cecilia String Quartet were very well received.

• G. Rainbird spoke on the TBA Inc letterhead logo and the need to replace the bee on the map of Tas with a better design. The present bee looks more like a cockroach. Resolve that the Delegate bring this up at the next Executive meeting.

• E. Wakefield History of the Northern Branch TBA Inc. A copy of the highlights of the first thirty years were presented to members [ History of the Northern Branch of the Tasmanian Beekeepers Association Incorporated]. Two other beekeeping organisations were formed before the Northern Branch TBA Inc but both folded.
